As I lie in bed considering the beginning of a new year and my impending 30th birthday the wind rages outside in a fittingly apocolyptic way. I'm never fond of New Years - which seems to be full of the desperate urge to shed the seaweed of the year and look foward with a frenzied optimisim that will be dashed as the light of January first starts to hurt your hungover eyes on its long march to giving your brain a good kicking.
So instead I've decided to look at reasons to be cheerful about 2008 from a pop-cultural perspective.
